Simple Shoes – Deux

Posted by 2ton Inspired on April 25, 2008

My husband would beg to differ that these aren’t baby booties number 2 but baby booties number 20. He seems to think that’s all I knit. Really though I haven’t made that many and have actually given quite a few away.

These are another pair of Simple Shoes. Made all within an evening.

Again I struggled a little with the wrap and turn part for the first shoe but it was smooth sailing after that hiccup. I don’t think they look as good in this cotton Lily Sugar n’ Cream yarn as they do with the Caron Worsted. I think the cotton isn’t as bulky so it doesn’t make the stitches look as full.

Funny Bunny

Posted by 2ton Inspired on April 21, 2008

DSC04619 (Large)So I gave the Spring Bunnies to my nephews for Easter and the first thing the older one said was, “Where’s the body?” (The younger one is too young to notice!) He made me take the bunny home and make him a body. Which I did and totally winged. I took two tries because the first time I made the belly way to fat and the body overwhelmed the head. One arm is a little shorter then the other but overall I think it looks alright!

I think he’s a budding designer/artist because when I gave him the completed bunny he looked at me and said, “Where’s the tail?” I couldn’t help but laugh. His mom said it didn’t need a tail but he really wanted one so I told him that when he came over next week I’d have a pompom tail for the bunny. He also wondered why I chose black for the eyes, nose and mouth. In his opinion red would have been a better choice.

I also completely failed at my mission to make some baby booties. The weekend was busier then I expected it to be!

Baby Booties

Posted by 2ton Inspired on April 18, 2008

On Wednesday Craftzine posted about a Baby Bootie contest and inserted a few adorable pictures of booties as in inspiration. I was in awe. Some of them are so darling and I’m sure they take up just tiny bits of fabric (which I have a lot of!)

Following the link to flicker to all photos tagged Baby Booties I was in bootie heaven and found a few to die for booties from sellers on Etsy. One of my favorites has got to be Funky Shapes. Go check out the shop! You’ll be ohh-ing and ahh-ing at every little pair.

A while back I bookmarked a tutorial from BareMaked on how to make reversible baby booties thinking someday I’d want to make them. I think this weekend is that day! Another pattern I just found is from Stardust Shoes. They look pretty similar, but the construction might be a bit different. I haven’t looked closely at the patterns yet.

On another note, knitting/crocheting has been pretty scarce (hence the lack of posts). I did just receive my order from Knitpicks and plan to start on (another!) pair of fingerless gloves for my mom. The weather is getting warmer these days so I hope she can get some wear out of them yet. Hopefully these will retain their shape better since the yarn has a bit of elastic in it. But more lamenting on the need for multiple pairs later when they’re finished!

Lets go shopping!

Posted by 2ton Inspired on April 14, 2008

The verdict is still up in the air about how I feel about this variation of the tunic. I used worsted weight yarn and size 11 needles. For the most part I followed the pattern increasing and shaping where instructed. I should have made it a bit shorter and probably added more shaping to the waist (I only did the number indicated in the size M pattern) to give it a more fitted look. Even though it’s a tad big I think it’ll look ok with skinny jeans and a belt.

Since I’m not fond of curling edges I added ribbing at the bottom and on the sleeves.

I also prefer the knit side to the garter so I turned it inside out before sewing up the pockets. Otherwise if you skip the pockets it can be reversible. No action shots yet, but I hope to have some soon.

Overall an easy pattern to follow after I got past the pocket issues. (See post 1 or check out craftster’s Knitalong thread). Using worsted weight yarn and smaller needles seems to work out well once you do the math. Like I mentioned earlier I think there needs to be added shaping as well. We’ll also see how well Red Heart Soft holds up to normal wear.

Pattern: Shopping Tunic, Twinkles Big City Knits

Yarn: Red Heart Soft (2.25 balls)

Nameless Bunny

Posted by 2ton Inspired on April 10, 2008

Our little Benny (or as we have affectionately started calling him, Moonkey) has been longing for a companion for quite some time. I initially wanted to make the Strawberry pattern from the book (Amigurumi Supper Happy Crochet Cute by Elizabeth Doherty) but I had some issues with the wig and decided to make her a bunny instead and combined both patterns together.

DSC04612 (Small)

Since I haven’t gotten any “real” eyes for my amigurumi’s yet I made them bobble eyes and it gives her that semi-crazed buggy eye look. Hehehe. I also didn’t have the right size hook to make the outside of the eye (the white part) and had to wing that. I like how her dress turned out though. It probably could have been longer but she’s supposed to be punk rock! In hindsight I probably should have given her knee high socks to complete the look. And I forgot to take a picture of her undies… that’s right she’s got on boy undies underneath that dress!

DSC04610 (Small)

Her ears, arms and legs all have some of that fuzzy pipe wired stuff so they’re bendable. It doesn’t stay bended very well in the arms and legs because of the stuffing but the ears are cute!

DSC04615 (Small)

And finally the happy couple! Moonkey likes her a lot and thinks she’s the best thing since sliced bread.

Just a side note on the pattern: there are a couple of errors in the instructions for color. Namely the shoe, it says to use cream when it should be red! Otherwise I think the rest of the pattern is great!

Now on to the dilemma of what to make next! My knitpicks order has been delayed (silly me I forgot to enter our address, I just put in our apt number!) so I’m not sure what’s up next. I better figure it out soon before I meet up with my friends this weekend.

(Gah! Is it me or all the pictures blurry?! Maybe it’s time for a new camera… or photographer?)

Nada Surf

Posted by 2ton Inspired on April 4, 2008

One of my new favorite bands, Nada Surf, played last night at First Avenue (yep the club made infamous by Prince and Purple Rain). As usual hearing the band, heck any band, live is is amazing. We were blessed by the addition of a 4th musician and friend of the band that was able to join them for the week. This 4th musician played trumpet, keyboard, sang vocals and probably many more things my untrained ears didn’t pick up.

DSC04605

Being small Asian girls we squeezed our way up front and were lucky enough to get jostled (people pushing and then some people left in the middle!) into the 2nd row. Unfortunately behind a very tall guy (see him on the right side of the picture above?) and others kept trying to get in in front of us because we needed the space to look around him!

DSC04606

I didn’t take a lot of pictures because not too many others were and I didn’t want to blind the band with my flash. We had a really great spot in front of Matthew though so it was fun to just watch, listen and enjoy.

I thought it was cute how the bassist, Daniel, was just chilling out while he waited for his part. What amazed me the most about him though was his ability to sing while smoking. Literally, the cigarette was hanging out of his mouth while he sang!

Check em out at http://www.myspace.com/nadasurf to hear a few of their songs. They’ve a few more cities to play in, so check em out if you can!

Fabrics, oh my!

Posted by 2ton Inspired on April 2, 2008

Most of my sewing projects are real instant gratification projects. Things that can be done in a day or a few hours, like purses! It’s a wonder I spend more time knitting then sewing because of this.

My biggest dilemma is choosing the right fabrics. Is it the right texture? Do the colors match? Will it go with the rest of my wardrobe? I always get so overwhelmed when going to the fabric store because of all the choices.

What’s brought about this topic? Well, Purlbee.com just debuted their first line of fabrics this week, Cake Rock Beach, and I really really like the Fire and Water collection (pictured below.)

Cake Rock Beach

And that led to my browsing all the online stores I’ve got bookmarked and came across a few others that I’m drawn to. The image below are fabrics from RetroDepot’s Folklore collection. Green, brown and pink is becoming one of my favorite color combinations.

And finally, I’m really drawn to the greens (it screams SPRING!) and love the punch of pink from Joel Dewberry’s Ginseng Collection.

I wonder if I can start a fabric budget in addition to my yarn budget. 🙂
